University Student (internship) résumé example
A student's résumé is read in about thirty seconds by someone who already knows you lack full-time experience; what they look for is proof that you finish things and can be trusted with real work. This example states the degree and graduation date in the first line, turns one internship and two part-time jobs into measured results, and gives the projects section the same weight as experience.
Third-year Industrial and Operations Engineering student at the University of Michigan (GPA 3.7, graduating May 2027) looking for a summer 2026 internship in operations or supply-chain analytics. Built a slotting model for 4,000 SKUs that cut picker walking distance 14% during a summer internship, and a bus-delay predictor used by 300 classmates. Tutor 60 students a semester in calculus and statistics.
Education
- Expected May 2027. Coursework: Stochastic Processes, Production Systems, Optimisation, Data Analytics for Engineers.
Experience
- Built a slotting model in Python and Excel for 4,000 SKUs using six months of order data; picker walking distance fell 14% in the pilot zone over four weeks.
- Ran time studies on three packing lines and proposed a bench layout change; packs per hour rose from 38 to 45 after the change was adopted on all three lines.
- Produced the weekly KPI deck (throughput, accuracy, overtime) for the site general manager, replacing a manual report that took a supervisor three hours.
- Tutor about 60 students a semester in drop-in and scheduled sessions, eight hours a week; average student rating 4.8 out of 5 across three semesters.
- Wrote a 12-page problem set on hypothesis testing that the centre now hands out to all introductory statistics students.
- Led six student workers per shift at a dining hall serving up to 400 meals an hour; cut average line wait at peak from nine to six minutes by reassigning stations.
- Trained 10 new hires on food-safety procedures; the hall passed both unannounced inspections of the year with no findings.
Projects
Gradient-boosting model in Python on two years of campus transit data predicting arrival delay to a mean error of 1.4 minutes; the web page was used by about 300 students in its first month.
Discrete-event simulation in SimPy of a 200-bed hospital's admissions; our policy cut modelled waiting time 22% and placed second of 24 teams.

Questions
Part-time jobs, volunteering and paid or unpaid work for a society. Then make the projects section strong: course projects, hackathons and competitions with your role, the tools and a result.
Yes, while you are a student or within a year of graduating: degree, university, expected date and GPA if it is 3.5 or above. After your first full-time job it moves below experience.
Only three or four courses that match what the posting asks for, in one line under the degree. A list of fifteen modules is skipped.
One page, always. If it runs over, cut the oldest part-time job or the weakest project, not the numbers.

Experience
- Serve about 200 customers a shift, run the till alone from 11 am and cash up at close; no discrepancies in eight months.
- Signed up and tracked 120 children aged 4 to 11 over six weeks, listened to them talk about their books and handed out rewards; 78% finished the challenge, up from 65% the year before.

Backend engineer with six years building payment and logistics services in Go and TypeScript. Owned services handling 40,000 requests per minute, cut a core API's p95 latency by 70%, and led the migration of a monolith into twelve services without a customer-facing incident. Comfortable on call, in design reviews and in front of a whiteboard with product.
Experience
- Led the split of the order monolith into twelve Go services behind an API gateway; deploy frequency went from weekly to 30+ releases a day with zero Sev-1 incidents during the migration.
- Rewrote the rate-calculation API with cached carrier tables and request coalescing; p95 latency dropped from 820 ms to 240 ms at 40,000 requests per minute.
- Designed the event schema and outbox pattern used by 9 teams; duplicate shipment events fell to zero after rollout.
- Ran the on-call rotation for the platform group and cut paged alerts by 60% by deleting noisy checks and adding SLO-based burn-rate alerts.
- Built the direct-debit mandate service (TypeScript, PostgreSQL) that processed £1.2bn in its first year; passed the external PCI DSS audit with no findings.
- Introduced contract tests between the mobile app and the ledger API; integration bugs found in production fell from 11 to 2 per quarter.
- Mentored three graduate engineers through their first production launches; all three were promoted within 18 months.
- Delivered React and Node features for eight client projects, from a council booking system to a retailer's loyalty app.
- Set up the agency's first CI pipeline (GitHub Actions, Docker), cutting release day from a full afternoon to 20 minutes.
